KIRBY MCRILL WALK

Who was Kirby McRill?

Kirby McRill was born in 1875 and owned a farm near Tonganoxie, Kansas. In 1919, he was summoned to jury duty in Leavenworth, Kansas and walked 26 miles in a blizzard to appear in court. The court had been closed due to the blizzard, but Kirby made it on time none-the-less. Kirby so enjoyed the notoriety that he received, that he began walking longer and longer journeys and soon became the poster child for walking and the Heart of America Club. In May 1920 he walked from Topeka, Kansas to Chicago, Illinois in 7 1/2 days, averaging 70 miles per day. He dedicated himself to the causes of private enterprise, civic boosting and hiking. Among other nomenclatures, Kirby has been affectionately described as, "the genuine article in native eccentricity".

SAVE THE DATE!!

Saturday, June 20, 2015

The Second Annual Kirby McRill Walk will also feature a run for the runners out there. The runners will take off earlier in the morning prior to the walk and will not compete in the challenges. Since Kirby McRill was an avid walker, our main event will still be the 5K Walk. We welcome familes, neighbors, siblings, and friends, to challenge each other in teams of four! Registration is NOW OPEN! Can't Wait to see you there!
